Lara Kool (1985) was born in Tilburg. When she was six, her parents moved the family to Assen. With a stop in Easterwâlde, she has lived in Dokkum since 2017. That was when she started to learn Frisian through courses from Afûk. Her parents were from Ljouwert and spoke Liwwarders with each other and Dutch with Lara and her brother. Her grandparents did speak Frisian amongst themselves, but her grandfather died when Lara was three. This prevented her from picking it up from her grandparents. Despite the delay, a passion was ultimately born for the Frisian language. She is connected with her ancestry through the language.
She has written short stories and poems since her childhood. Some of her poems appeared in the school paper during secondary school. But then there was a long period of more or less inactivity. Until September 2022, when she saw an announcement of the class Introduction to Writing Techniques A. The course by Arjan Hut came along at a good time. Afterwards, she participated in two writing groups led by Sigrid Kingma. The first was for the FeRstival, which chose three poems by Lara for that year’s edition of their publication Fersefariaasje. For the second group Lara wrote eight nonfiction texts for the primary school project ‘Reading to learn’. These stories were published as well. In 2023 Lara was one of the five winners in the poster poetry contest by the Poet Laureate of Fryslân. She is now working on a poetry collection and a children’s book.
