Griet Westra

Griet Westra (Leeuwarden, 1953) lives in Burgum, Friesland. She writes her sms-poetry in three languages (Frisian, English and Dutch), accompanied by a photo, which is often the source of inspiration. She also writes multilingual haiku’s. She performed in theater De Bres. She published in the newspaper NRC-next and in the e-magazine Pretparkpoëzie of Ted van Lieshout. She is a teacher at CSG-Comenius in Leeuwarden, where she encourages colleagues and pupils (age 13-18) to write poetry.

BE SOBATS

wrestling with a lost war
in his head the veteran fights on
across the dessa heavy metal must
flee from his disabled body
traumas back then are alive each day

wrakseljend mei de ferlerne oarloch
yn syn holle fjochtet de feteraan troch
de dessa it lead moat de bealch út
de helske tiid fan doe belibbet hy
alle dagen wer

worstelend met de verloren oorlog
in z’n hoofd vecht de veteraan door
de dessa ’t lood moet uit z’n lijf en leden
z’n trauma van toen beleeft hij in elk heden
